You might be familiar with the stories function on apps like Instagram, WhatsApp, and Snapchat. These bite-sized, temporary updates are seemingly everywhere, and now you can add another app to that list: Spotify.
Spotify Hires Famous Faces for Stories
If you head over to Spotify's Christmas Hits playlist on Android or iOS, look at the banner and you might see an image you can tap to launch a story.
That's right. A feature that was first introduced with Snapchat, then seemed to spread to every social media app, stories are a way of consuming short picture or video updates that disappear after a set amount of time. And now it's on Spotify.
This isn't the first we've heard about Spotify working on stories---last year the feature emerged with "Storyline" branding. Plus, some influencers were able to add stories to playlists earlier this year.
Now, however, Spotify is recruiting big name artists to help demonstrate the stories feature. The story on the Christmas Hits playlist features the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Meghan Trainor, and Kelly Clarkson as they share their favorite Christmas memories.
Elsewhere, you can see a story on the Tear Drop playlist and the enhanced version of Megan Thee Stallion's Good News album.
The feature works much like it does anywhere else. The story launches full screen, with bars at the top to represent the time remaining. You can tap to quickly move between them and swipe down to close.
In speaking to Engadget, Spotify confirmed that this is a test. As such, you may not see the stories feature, and it may not continue to be rolled out.
When asked for more details by Engadget, a Spotify spokesperson said:
At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience. Some of those tests end up paving the path for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning. We have no further news to share on future plans at this time.
Whether Spotify really needs stories is a different matter. Since it's an app designed for listening to music and podcasts, rather than one for social media, the value is questionable. Nevertheless, no doubt Spotify will be monitoring its popularity in order to decide the next step.
